2020 Jayco Precept problems: recalls, complaints and what to check

NHTSA has 4 recalls and 6 owner complaints on file for the 2020 Jayco Precept. Here is what they are, what a technician checks for each kind of fault, and how to look one over before you buy it.

Other: 1 recall, 3 complaints

Recall 22V297000 (04/05/2022): EQUIPMENT:RECREATIONAL VEHICLE/TRAILER

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Jayco Precept motorhomes. The heat shield beneath the storage compartment may not be long enough, which can allow the heat from the exhaust system to melt the storage compartment.

Fix: Dealers will extend the heat shield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2022. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267.

Motorhome chassis: 1 recall, 2 complaints

Recall 20V667000 (29/10/2020): ENGINE

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Jayco Alante, Precept, Entegra Vision, 2021 Jayco Precept Prestige, Entegra Vision XL, and Emblem motorhomes built on a Ford F-53 chassis. The engine covers may not contain sufficient heat insulation, causing the interior surface temperatures to be excessive.

Fix: Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional insulation insert, and a foam seal on the outer edge of the cover, free of charge. The recall began December 28, 2020. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267. Jayco's number for this recall is 9903527.

What a tech checks: The chassis (Ford, Freightliner, Mercedes, Ram) is serviced by the chassis maker's dealer, not the RV shop. RV techs handle the house, not the drivetrain. Before you buy: Chassis recalls are fixed free at the chassis maker's dealer.

Doors, windows, steps and lights: 1 recall, 2 complaints

Recall 20V337000 (09/06/2020): VISIBILITY:GLASS, SIDE/REAR

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2020 Motorized Alante, Greyhawk, Melbourne, Precept, Redhawk, Seneca, Accolade, Emblem, Esteem, Odyssey, Qwest, and Vision recreational vehicles. The adhesive bond between the glass and the metal hinge frame of the frameless crank out vent and egress windows may fail which would then allow the glass to detach and fall out.

Fix: Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the frameless windows for proper adhesive bond strength, replacing the windows as necessary, free of charge. This recall began June 15, 2020. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-517-9137. Jayco's number for this recall is 9901508.

What a tech checks: Mostly adjustments and wear: steps that stop halfway on a bad switch, doors out of alignment after a slide shifted, exterior lights with a corroded ground. Before you buy: Every door, lock, window and light.

LP gas and gas appliances: 1 recall

Recall 21V204000 (24/03/2021): EQUIPMENT:APPLIANCE:OVEN/STOVE/COOKTOP

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Jayco Alante, Precept, Greyhawk, Redhawk, Entegra Esteem, and Odyssey motorhomes equipped with Dometic 3 burner cooking stoves. The saddle valve securing bolt may be overtightened, possibly damaging the o-ring seal and causing a continuous gas leak.

Fix: Jayco will notify owners, and Dometic service centers will install a remedy kit of gaskets, washers, thread locker bolts, and two round orange labels, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 3, 2021. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-617-776-0344. Jayco's number for this recall is 9903566.

What a tech checks: Regulator, lines and fittings, then the appliances: furnace, water heater, range. A proper pressure-drop leak test is the first thing a tech does on an LP complaint. Before you buy: Smell for gas with the tank open; have a shop do the leak test.

12 volt and 120 volt electrical: 2 complaints

What a tech checks: Voltage drop, grounds, the converter and the transfer switch. Melted shore-cord plugs and bad grounds cause most of the electrical complaints techs actually see. Before you buy: Battery at rest, converter output on shore power, GFCI test, every outlet.
