Air Conditioning Diagnostics
Scope and operating sequence
GENERAL: identify unit, thermostat, zone controller and soft-start accessories. Dometic and Coleman-Mach examples do not share wiring or performance limits.
Record unit/controller identification, ducting, heat-pump capability and source. Distinguish a missing cooling request from poor cooling after startup.
Smoke, burning odor, hot connections, water near wiring or repeated breaker trips end operation. Roof access, capacitors and energized compartments require qualified service.
Cooling demand enables airflow and compressor operation after applicable delays. Refrigerant transfers heat from indoor air to outdoor air.
Heat-pump mode changes refrigerant routing; defrost and temperature limits vary. Fan operation does not establish compressor operation or correct mode.
Ordered symptom checks
1. Classify blank controls, absent fan/cooling, trips, icing or leakage. Record weather, humidity, source and competing loads.
2. Confirm zone, mode and setpoint; allow documented restart delay. Quick cycling obscures faults and can stress the compressor.
3. Check labeled protection and source. A running fan does not establish acceptable compressor voltage during startup.
4. With operation off, inspect accessible filters and restore specified filtration. Permanent removal contaminates coils and changes airflow.
5. Compare register airflow and inspect accessible duct openings. A cold discharge at one outlet does not prove adequate delivered airflow throughout the RV.
6. Inspect accessible distribution parts for return-to-supply leakage. Recirculating cold discharge can satisfy sensing while occupied areas remain warm.
7. For icing, end compressor cooling and follow documented thawing instructions. Frozen-coil temperature readings cannot establish normal cooling performance or refrigerant charge.
8. If operation is safe, compare fan modes and cooling demand. Noise cannot reliably distinguish fans from compressor operation.
9. Compare verified suitable sources through normal connections. Source-specific failure suggests supply or transfer trouble, not necessarily AC failure.
10. Distinguish condensation from rain and plumbing leaks. Record whether water appears during cooling, after shutdown or only during rain.
Low airflow can yield cold measured discharge yet poor room cooling. Increasing temperature difference is not automatically evidence of greater cooling capacity.
Measurements and interpretation
After stabilization, measure return/supply dry-bulb temperatures at identified paths. Record humidity, fan speed, airflow condition and probe positions.
Temperature difference depends on moisture load and airflow. No universal split establishes charge, compressor health or suitability for the RV's total heat load.
Qualified personnel measure unit supply during startup and running using rated instruments. Another outlet may not represent unit voltage.
Excessive voltage drop under load implicates the supply path; acceptable voltage does not rule out starting components, mechanical trouble or control defects.
Capacitors can retain hazardous energy after disconnection. Testing and discharge use the manufacturer's procedure; never short terminals or substitute an unverified capacitor.
Interpret current with nameplate data, voltage, temperature and stage. High current does not condemn compressors; low current does not prove cooling.
Sensor checks need the exact chart and measured temperature. Disconnected sensors and generic thermostat jumpers are not cooling-forcing tests.
Refrigerant diagnostics require qualified sealed-system service. No assumed charging port, pressure target, freeze-sensor bypass or undocumented control reset applies across rooftop models.
Repair verification and coverage
After repair, confirm starts, stabilized temperatures and representative register airflow. Recheck condensation handling and any disturbed rain sealing.
Verify thermostat satisfaction and documented restart behavior under representative loads. Test installed heating modes separately; cooling success does not establish heat-pump operation.
Escalate repeated trips, recurring icing or inadequate performance after airflow checks. Provide source, voltage, current and temperature conditions rather than a guessed component.
Support page readable; AC FAQ failed and document portal unreadable. Exact manuals remain UNVERIFIED; GENERAL coverage supplies no model specifications.
