Generator Diagnostics

Scope and operating sequence

GENERAL: distinguish fuel, cooling, output architecture and installation. Cummins Onan examples require full model and specification letter, not rated output.

Record model, serial, specification suffix, controller and remote starting. Distinguish generator protection from transfer equipment and distribution breakers.

CO alarms, exhaust damage, fuel leakage, smoke or abnormal mechanical noise end operation. Exhaust can enter occupied areas; never test in enclosed spaces.

Starting requires control power, cranking, fuel delivery, engine operation and enabled output. Transfer equipment may apply RV loads later.

Protection monitors model-specific conditions. Stable sound does not establish acceptable voltage, frequency or transfer to RV loads.

Ordered symptom checks

1. Classify absent/slow crank, no start, shutdown or running without AC. Record load state and exact original indications.

2. Disable automatic starting using installed documentation before inspection. Shore disconnection does not necessarily disable scheduled, battery-triggered or remote starting.

3. While stopped and cool, check oil, fuel and intake/exhaust. Oil checks require documented technique and vehicle position.

A vehicle fuel gauge does not prove fuel reaches the generator pickup. Supply arrangements and usable reserve differ; no universal tank cutoff applies.

4. For absent/slow crank, measure accessible starting-battery voltage during authorized starting. Record voltage, attempt duration and ambient temperature.

5. Qualified service compares battery/starter voltage while cranking. Normal battery voltage with low starter voltage implicates the supply path.

Slow cranking can reflect battery, cable, return-path or mechanical problems. A relay click does not establish current delivery or condemn the starter.

6. If cranking without starting, record firing attempts. Stop at documented cranking limits; no generic extended-cranking procedure applies.

Fuel, ignition and compression checks differ between gasoline, LP and diesel. Priming commands and fuel bleeding require the exact engine and generator instructions.

7. For shutdown, record elapsed runtime, attached load and unchanged fault indication. Capture evidence before any documented recovery procedure; do not improvise resets.

8. For absent AC, inspect normal accessible breakers and transfer indications. Engine operation does not prove output reaches distribution.

9. If safe, compare unloaded and representative loaded operation through normal connections. Observe documented warmup before introducing loads.

10. A single appliance causing failure invites load, startup-demand and circuit checks. Failure with diverse loads suggests broader supply or generator investigation.

Measurements and interpretation

Generator terminals, rotating parts and hot surfaces require qualified access. Electrical measurements use rated equipment; absence of shore power does not establish isolation.

Record voltage, frequency, load and location. Compare against exact generator and connected-load requirements; there are no universal diagnostic limits.

Acceptable generator output with absent RV power points toward protection, wiring or transfer, without identifying a defective switch.

Voltage or frequency sag during load change may involve excessive demand or regulation. Output architecture matters; engine speed is not universally proportional to frequency.

Do not bypass oil, temperature or overspeed protection; alter governor settings; spray starting fluid; or open fuel systems using generic advice.

Indications report monitored conditions, not replacement instructions. Code mappings are omitted because exact model, specification and manual revision are unverified.

Repair verification and coverage

After repair, verify fluid levels, fuel and exhaust integrity, enclosure restoration and disabled unwanted auto-start. Qualified personnel verify disturbed fuel or electrical connections.

Test cold/warm starts, documented warmup, representative loads and shutdown. Confirm transfer and output stability, then inspect for leaks.

Escalate repeat shutdown, unstable output or starting failure with specification suffix, measurements and original indications. Protection events do not establish failed sensors.

Cummins model/specification index readable; quick-start PDF unreadable. Exact procedures remain UNVERIFIED; GENERAL coverage includes no codes or reset sequences.
