LP and Furnace Diagnostics
Scope and operating sequence
GENERAL: separate LP supply, regulation, distribution and furnace. Suburban and Dometic examples do not share switches, timing or pressure specifications.
Record furnace, thermostat, regulator and duct identification. Note fuel availability, cylinder changes, altitude and conditions when failure occurs.
Gas odor, CO alarm, soot or exhaust intrusion ends testing. Avoid ignition sources and switches; leave the area and seek emergency assistance.
Typical operation progresses through demand, blower airflow, safety permission, ignition, flame proving and heating; shutdown includes controlled cooldown.
Airflow and limit devices supervise different hazards. Model-dependent sequencing means a missing stage narrows investigation without identifying replacement parts.
Ordered symptom checks
1. Classify absent blower, failed ignition, flame dropout or short cycling. Record sequence using sound and approved viewing access.
2. Confirm thermostat mode, setpoint and zone. Displayed demand does not prove a valid request reaches the furnace.
3. Check accessible switches and labeled protection. Fuse appearance does not establish continuity or power at the load.
4. At safe access, measure identified DC supply-to-return during startup and heating. Compare with exact model operating limits.
A blower can spin while voltage or airflow remains inadequate. Normal unloaded battery voltage does not establish adequate supply at the furnace.
5. With heating off, inspect accessible returns, registers and ducts. Closed outlets, crushed ducts or blockage can cause overheating.
6. Inspect exterior combustion openings from safe ground access. Debris or vent damage needs service; modified screens alter approved installation.
7. If no blower follows confirmed demand, distinguish lost supply, missing control request and motor circuit faults using the exact wiring diagram.
Blower operation without ignition leaves airflow permission, limits, wiring and ignition controls unresolved. A click is not proof that gas reached the burner.
8. For dropout, record blower continuation, voltage and timing. These help distinguish supply interruption from failed flame proving.
9. For cycling before satisfaction, log airflow, temperature and demand. Limit operation can indicate restricted distribution, not defective limits.
10. Compare symptoms across LP appliances without creating additional ignition attempts. Shared failure suggests upstream supply trouble; one working appliance does not clear it.
Measurements and interpretation
Qualified gas service measures approved locations under specified load. Tank quantity or static pressure alone cannot establish regulator performance.
Pressure acceptable without demand may fall with concurrent appliance use. A load-related drop supports a supply restriction but does not locate it.
Gas leak checks use approved methods and qualified personnel. Never use flame, mouth suction or improvised pressure to test gas-related switches or valves.
Technician switch tests require exact circuit and operating state. Continuity alone cannot establish airflow calibration, mounting or wiring reliability.
No bridged sail switches, bypassed limits, forced gas valves or undocumented board resets. Repeated ignition after unexplained failure can increase the hazard.
Flame-proving measurements need specified instruments, reference and procedure. Visible flame does not establish safe combustion or valid proving signals.
Record thermostat demand and discharge temperature together during cycling. Cooling blower operation after burner shutdown may be normal, not an independently failed controller.
Repair verification and coverage
After repair, qualified service verifies gas connections and combustion. Confirm ignition, sustained heat, satisfaction and cooldown without bypasses.
Repeat the original load conditions and inspect airflow distribution. Verify alarm operation using alarm instructions; a silent alarm does not certify combustion.
Escalate repeat lockout, soot, failed limits or unexplained pressure loss with model identification and sequence notes. Restore covers and approved venting before release.
Support page specifies qualified gas service, not diagnostic limits. Exact manuals remain UNVERIFIED; GENERAL coverage omits pressure values and codes.
