Level, seals and the warm fridge
Before you touch a board or a cooling unit, two free checks catch half of all warm absorption fridges.
The short version
- An absorption fridge has no pump. Off level, the ammonia solution pools and the boiler overheats with nothing circulating.
- The pattern: boiler very hot, absorber hot, no frost on the fins. Level it, let it rest an hour, restart, and give it the night.
- Side to side about 3 degrees and front to back about 6 is the usual limit. Put a level on the freezer floor, not the counter.
- Dollar bill test the gaskets. Warm air leaking in frosts the freezer fast and keeps the fridge side warm.
- Then check the thermistor's position and reading, the baffle behind the condenser, and only then think about the cooling unit.
Numbers
- Level limit: about 3 deg side to side, 6 deg front to back
- Cooling unit failure signs: ammonia smell, yellow powder, wet boiler insulation
Shop tip
Ask where it was parked when it quit. 'At the campsite' with a hot boiler and no leak signs is a level problem most of the time.
