Lippert in-wall and through-frame slides

What it is

Lippert In-Wall (Schwintek) slides use one motor per side. Each motor turns a torque shaft with spur gears that run on gear racks on the room. A dual-motor synchronous velocity controller keeps both sides in step, using motor Hall sensor feedback. Lippert Electric Through Frame slides use a rack and pinion guide system with an electric ball screw actuator. The actuator has an automatic clutch.

Before you diagnose

Battery fully charged. Measure voltage at the controller, not just the battery.

12V fuse for the controller is OK. A fuse that blows right away means a wiring fault to the board.

No outside obstructions: trees, posts, folded flap seals, debris on the slide roof.

No inside obstructions: furniture, open cabinets, carpet, small objects wedged under the floor or at the sides.

Gear racks are free of debris.

Power and ground connections are clean, tight and free of corrosion.

In-wall controller error codes

For motor faults, the green LED blinks once for Motor 1 and twice for Motor 2. The red LED blinks 2 to 9 times to show the code.

2|Battery drop out|Charge the battery and check the supply cable.|Voltage fell below 6 V while running.

3|Low battery|Charge the battery. Recheck voltage at the controller.|Below 8 V at start of cycle.

4|High battery|Check the charger or converter output.|Above 18 V.

5|Excessive motor current|Look for binding, obstruction or rack debris on the side that stalls.|One side of the slide keeps stalling.

6|Motor short circuit|Inspect the motor and motor wiring for a short.

8|Hall signal not present|Check for pinched or broken wiring in the harness or motor pigtail, and for a disconnected or bad motor.|Most common code. The encoder gives no signal.

9|Hall power short to ground|Replace the motor.|Short in the red or black wire on the motor.

Electronic override (bring room in on an error)

1. Find the slide controller board. 2. Press the mode button 6 times quickly, then press a 7th time and hold about 5 seconds. 3. The red and green LEDs flash: override mode is on. 4. Hold the wall switch IN until the room is fully in.

In override mode the sync protection is bypassed. Watch both sides of the room while it moves.

Resync the motors

1. Fully extend the room with the switch. Hold until the motors shut off on their own. 2. Retract 1-2 inches. 3. Repeat steps 1-2. Two or three repetitions are often needed. 4. Fully extend, then fully retract. Always let the motors shut off on their own before releasing the switch.

When the motors are in sync, they shut down at the same time.

Only one side moves

Does one side move 2-4 inches and stop? 1. Run the switch while helpers push the stuck side. 2. Push the stuck side in and out by hand. If it moves several inches, suspect a broken motor shaft. 3. Disengage the motor and try moving the room by hand. 4. Check the status LEDs when the switch is pressed, both directions. If they don't light, or light in one direction only, re-seat the switch plug on the board. If it still fails, the switch or its wiring is bad.

In-wall minimum operating voltage|8 V (charge the battery if under 11 V at the controller)

Never jump or charge the battery from the power connections on the in-wall controller. Always do it at the battery.

Controller 211852|Replaces Rev B, Rev C-1 and Rev C-2 dual-motor controllers

Controller 326876|8 amp dual-motor controller. Will NOT replace other versions.

In-wall motors|229466 std, 287298 high torque 500:1, 236575 300:1 (replaces obsolete)

In-wall column replacement (key points)

1. Run the room out until about 1/4 is left inside. Jack one side just enough to carry its weight. Wedge a 2x4 on edge between the T-molding and the room top. 2. Disconnect the motor harness at the top of the column. Remove the column screws and cut the caulk. 3. Make a jumper from a 3 ft piece of harness with the motor connector. Use a cordless drill battery on the red and black wires to drive the column away from the wall. 4. Remove the rack screws and slide the racks past the bulb seal. 5. On the new unit, record the center-to-center rack spacing before removing the shipping angles. Seal the column. Align the lower rack lip to the bottom of the room. Set the other racks to the recorded spacing. 6. Jumper the motor to bring the column near the wall. Push the room flush, screw the column bottom to top, reconnect. 7. Resync after both sides are done.

Electric through-frame: troubleshooting

NO MOVE|Room does not move when the switch is pressed|Clear any obstruction. Check battery voltage, the fuse and the wiring for loose or corroded connectors.

RUNS NO MOVE|Motor runs but room does not move|Check the actuator jam nuts and nylock nuts at the front drive bracket. If they are OK, the motor or gear housing is bad.

SLOW|Motor runs but room is slow|Charge the battery, check the ground wire, check room adjustment for a bind.|Very low outdoor temperature can also slow it.

STALL|Room stalls mid travel|Crank the manual override a short distance, then retry the switch. Replace the actuator if that fails.

Motor test with meter or test light: 1. Check for 12V DC across the switch + and - terminals. 2. If yes, check for 12V DC on the motor leads. If 12V is present at the motor, replace the motor (not field serviceable). If not, repair the wiring between the switch and the motor. 3. If there is no 12V at the switch, check the battery-to-switch wiring and the 30A auto-reset breaker.

Over 90% of electrical problems are bad grounds. It is a negative ground system. Use a star washer and run an independent ground wire back to the battery.

Motor wiring|10 gauge minimum. Changing polarity reverses the motor.

Rack ID|14.5 deg: about 0.170 in tooth gap, 4 teeth per inch. 20 deg: about 0.231 in, 3 teeth per inch.

Spur gear ID|122739 has 18 teeth. 101941 has 15 teeth.

Squeaking gear packs: loosen the gear pack bolts, apply dry silicone to the drive shaft lube points only (not the gear teeth), then cycle the room several times.

Electric through-frame: manual override

Disconnect the battery before cranking manually. Power can backfeed through the motor and damage the system.

Outside the frame: put the crank handle (or a 3/4 in socket) on the crank extension with pin. Inside the frame: put a 3/4 in socket on the hex head crank extension at the top of the actuator. Clockwise retracts, counterclockwise extends. The actuator is manual-ready, so there is no need to disengage the motor.

Stop at full travel. Cranking past full in or full out strips the gears and voids the warranty.

Electric through-frame: seal adjustment

Seal in the IN position: loosen the 3/4 in nut outside the stop can (1 1/8 in wrench), screw the can in or out, retighten. Seal in the OUT position: move the 3/4 in nut (1 1/8 in wrench) and the nylock nut (1 1/16 in wrench). Height: loosen the 2 carriage bolts per bracket and the jam nut, then turn the vertical adjust bolt.
